The verses beside it

Ezekiel 34:24. I, the LORD, will be their God, and My servant David will be a prince among them. I, the LORD, have spoken.

Ezekiel 34:25. I will make with them a covenant of peace and rid the land of wild animals, so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forest.

Ezekiel 34:26. I will make them and the places around My hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season—showers of blessing.

Ezekiel 34:27. The trees of the field will give their fruit, and the land will yield its produce; My flock will be secure in their land. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have broken the bars of their yoke and delivered them from the hands that enslaved them.

Ezekiel 34:28. They will no longer be prey for the nations, and the beasts of the earth will not consume them. They will dwell securely, and no one will frighten them.

Where this verse sits

Ezekiel 34 begins with woe to the shepherds who slaughter the fat sheep and ignore the weak. God says he himself will search, bring back the strayed, and judge between sheep and sheep. Verses 23 through 31 promise one shepherd, “my servant David,” a covenant of peace, and the end of wild beasts and foreign yokes. Verse 26 places showers of blessing on the people and the places around God’s hill, and verse 27 ties the fruitfulness to knowing the Lord when the yoke breaks. Read the chapter from verse 11. The rain belongs to a rescued flock.

Reflection

Israel’s shepherds have fed themselves and left the flock as prey. In their place he promises to seek the lost himself, to set his servant David over them, and to make a covenant of peace. Showers in season, and showers of blessing, fall on that restored people and on the land around his hill. Fruit trees and secure sleep follow. The blessing is covenantal and concrete: a flock no longer enslaved, no longer food for the nations. To rip the phrase “showers of blessing” off this oracle and aim it at a private windfall is to ignore the shepherds God just condemned and the sheep he just promised to feed.

A prayer from this verse

“LORD, Shepherd of Israel, I have used Your blessings as a wish for my own weather. Send what You promised to the people You gather: peace, food, and safety from the hands that enslaved them. Make me a keeper of the flock rather than one more shepherd who feeds himself. Amen.”

One action: Use part of today to feed, visit, or defend one person who has been left as prey, and do it without announcing it.
