The verses beside it

Esther 4:12. When Esther’s words were relayed to Mordecai,

Esther 4:13. he sent back to her this reply: “Do not imagine that because you are in the king’s palace you alone will escape the fate of all the Jews.

Esther 4:14. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Esther 4:15. Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai:

Esther 4:16. “Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”

Where this verse sits

Esther 4 follows the decree purchased by Haman for the destruction of the Jews. Mordecai mourns in sackcloth at the king’s gate. Esther sends clothes and then a messenger, and Mordecai sends back her danger: the palace will not exempt her. Verse 14 is the end of that reply. Esther answers by gathering the Jews of Susa to fast for three days, and she decides to enter the king’s presence unsummoned, which the law answers with death. Read the chapter. “Such a time as this” is a question, and her next words accept that she might not live through the answer.

Reflection

Mordecai does not tell Esther that the fate of the Jews depends on her courage. He says the opposite. If she stays silent, relief and deliverance will arise from another place, and she and her father’s house will perish. Then he asks the question she cannot shake: who knows whether she has come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Providence is not a guarantee that she survives the throne room. Her answer in the next verses is a fast, and then, “If I perish, I perish.” The sentence that people quote about timing is spoken by a cousin in sackcloth to a queen who is afraid of a law that could kill her.

A prayer from this verse

“God of Israel, I want a calling that comes with safety. If You have placed me where I can speak for people who may die if I stay quiet, do not let comfort in the palace decide for me. Whether I perish or not, keep me from silence that abandons my father’s house. Amen.”

One action: Identify one injustice you have the access to name and have been postponing. Tell the person who needs to hear it, after you have asked others to pray.
