The verses beside it

Psalms 84:9. Take notice of our shield, O God, and look with favor on the face of Your anointed.

Psalms 84:10. For better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Psalms 84:11. For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.

Psalms 84:12. O LORD of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Where this verse sits

Psalm 84 is a song of pilgrimage. The singer envies the sparrow nesting near the altar and says a day in God’s courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. Verse 9 asks God to look on the anointed. Verse 11 gives the reason for the journey: sun, shield, grace, glory, and no good thing withheld from an upright walk. Verse 12 blesses the person who trusts the Lord of hosts. Read the whole short psalm. “No good thing” lives next to a doorkeeper’s contentment, which is a check against turning the line into a claim on every desire.

Reflection

A pilgrim who would rather be a doorkeeper in God’s house than dwell in the tents of the wicked now says why the house is worth the journey. The Lord God is a sun and a shield. He gives grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity. “No good thing” is defined by the God who is sun and shield, not by the pilgrim’s wish list. The integrity is a way of walking, and the blessed person in the last verse is simply the one who trusts. A day in the courts has already been preferred to a thousand elsewhere. The good thing God does not withhold is the life that can pray that preference and mean it.

A prayer from this verse

“LORD of hosts, be sun and shield to me, not a supplier I direct. I have called good whatever would make the journey easier. Withhold what would rot me, and do not withhold Yourself. I would rather stand at Your door than prosper in a tent where You are not praised. Amen.”

One action: Give up one comfort today that has been competing with time in God’s presence, and spend that time actually there.
