The verses beside it

Philippians 4:11. I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances.

Philippians 4:12. I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need.

Philippians 4:13. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:14. Nevertheless, you have done well to share in my affliction.

Philippians 4:15. And as you Philippians know, in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church but you partnered with me in the matter of giving and receiving.

Where this verse sits

Philippians 4:10–20 is Paul’s thank-you for a gift Epaphroditus carried. He is glad of their concern and careful to say he is not speaking out of need. Verse 11 is the lesson of contentment. Verse 12 lists the situations. Verse 13 gives the source of strength for every one of them. Verses 14 through 16 remember that Philippi partnered with him in giving when no other church did. Read verses 10 through 13 before you put the line on an achievement. The “all things” have just been defined as plenty and want.

Reflection

Paul has learned a skill, and he names it before he names his strength. He knows how to be brought low and how to abound, how to be fed and how to be hungry, how to have plenty and how to suffer need. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” is the explanation of that range, not a claim that every goal is now reachable. The “all things” are the conditions he just listed. Christ strengthened him to be content when the gift from Philippi was late and when it arrived. The next lines thank that church for sharing his affliction. Strength here looks like a man in prison who is not destroyed by either empty hands or full ones.

A prayer from this verse

“Christ Jesus, I wanted this sentence to underwrite my ambitions, and You gave it to a man who had learned hunger. Strengthen me for the circumstance I am actually in, empty or full. Teach me contentment that does not depend on the next improvement in my situation. Amen.”

One action: Write down one limitation you have been refusing, pray this verse over that limitation, and thank God for one provision you already have.
