Job 23:12. I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.
Where this verse sits
Job 23 is Job’s reply after Eliphaz has accused him again. He wishes he knew where to find God, so he could lay his case before him. Verses 8 and 9 confess a God who cannot be located in any direction. Verse 10 is the turn: God nevertheless knows Job’s way, and the test will end with gold. Verses 11 and 12 cling to God’s path and God’s words. Read verses 1 through 12. The gold is not Eliphaz’s doctrine that suffering always proves guilt. It is Job’s stubborn hope while the court he wants is still empty.
Read Job 23Reflection
Job cannot find God. East, west, north, south — if God is at work there, Job cannot see him. In the same breath he says God knows the way Job has taken, and that when the testing is finished he will come out like gold. This is not a man feeling lucky. It is a sufferer who refuses to let God’s hiddenness mean God’s ignorance, and who refuses to let the test mean he has been discarded. He adds that his feet have kept to God’s tracks and that he has treasured God’s words more than food. Gold is the hope of a person who still cannot get a hearing. Do not hand the verse to someone in pain as if the furnace were a compliment.
A prayer from this verse
“God who knows the way I have taken, I cannot find You in any direction I search, and the test has gone on longer than my explanations. Do not lose track of me. Bring me through as You see fit, and keep Your words dearer to me than the relief I am demanding. Amen.”
One action: Sit with someone who is suffering without quoting a result at them. If the verse is for you, pray it once and then be quiet.
