Where this verse sits

Paul tells a church he loves to be anxious for nothing, in a letter that also asks two coworkers to agree in the Lord. Verse 6 gives the practice: prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. Verse 7 gives the promise that the peace of God will guard heart and mind. Read verses 4 through 9 so the command is not left standing without the peace, the gentleness, and the things worth thinking about that surround it.

Reflection

Paul's command to 'Be anxious for nothing' is not a request to ignore reality, but an invitation to bring reality to a sovereign God. The antidote to anxiety is specific, prayerful gratitude. By presenting our requests to God with thanksgiving, we shift our focus from the problem to the Provider. We remind ourselves of His past faithfulness, which builds our confidence for our present needs.

A prayer from this verse

“Lord God, I bring my worries and anxieties to You today. Forgive me for trying to carry them on my own. I lay my specific requests before You with thanksgiving for all You have done. Guard my heart with Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen.”

One action: Write down three things you are anxious about, and turn each one into a prayer of request combined with a thank-you for God's past help.
