Where this verse sits

Luke 24 begins at early dawn on the first day, with the women carrying spices to a tomb. They find the stone moved and the body absent, and while they are puzzling, two men in radiant apparel stand beside them. Verse 5 asks why they seek the living among the dead. Verse 6 announces the resurrection and points back to Galilee. Verse 7 repeats Jesus’ own prediction of betrayal, crucifixion, and rising. Verse 8 says they remembered. Read verses 1 through 12. Peter will run and look and go home marveling. The first sermon at the tomb is a reminder.

Reflection

The women have come to the tomb with spices and found the stone rolled away and the body gone. Two men in radiant clothes ask a question that reorders their grief: “Why do you look for the living among the dead?” Then the announcement: he is not here; he has risen. They are told to remember what Jesus said while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man had to be delivered over, crucified, and rise on the third day. Memory and resurrection arrive together. The empty tomb is not a riddle they solve. It is a word they were supposed to have believed before they ever bought the spices.

A prayer from this verse

“Living Lord, I keep searching for You among things that cannot hold You, and I forget the sentences You already spoke. Raise my memory with my hope. Let the cross and the third day be the news I carry from the tomb, not a puzzle I leave there. Amen.”

One action: Read Luke 9:22 and Luke 24:1–8 side by side, and tell one person, in a sentence, that the women were sent to remember.
