The verses beside it

Hebrews 11:4. By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous when God gave approval to his gifts. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

Hebrews 11:5. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

Hebrews 11:6. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Hebrews 11:7. By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Hebrews 11:8. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going.

Where this verse sits

Hebrews 11:5 says Enoch was taken and, before that, was commended as having pleased God. Verse 6 explains the pleasure: faith that God exists and that he rewards earnest seekers. Verse 7 shows Noah warned about unseen things, building, and becoming an heir of righteousness. Verse 8 sends Abraham out without a map. Read verses 4 through 10. “Impossible to please” is not a threat hung over anxious Christians. It is the reason the chapter’s obedience counts as commendation rather than as bare effort.

Reflection

Enoch has just been commended as someone who pleased God, and the writer will not let that commendation float free. Without faith it is impossible to please him. The faith required of anyone who approaches is specific: believe that he exists, and believe that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. A vague spirituality that will not say God is there, or a grim obedience that expects no reward from his hand, both fail this sentence. Noah, in the next verse, builds an ark for things not yet seen. Seeking is not a mood of interest. It is the approach of a person who expects God to answer.

A prayer from this verse

“God, I approach You half-convinced You might be a useful idea, and half-convinced You keep a closed hand. I believe that You are, and that You reward the person who seeks You in earnest. Please let my coming to You today be the kind that pleases You. Amen.”

One action: Set a time today to seek God with one earnest request, and write down what “reward” would mean if it were his presence rather than your preferred outcome.
