The verses beside it
Hosea 6:1. Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us to pieces, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bind up our wounds.
Hosea 6:2. After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.
Hosea 6:3. So let us know— let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.
Hosea 6:4. What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your loyalty is like a morning mist, like the early dew that vanishes.
Hosea 6:5. Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth, and My judgments go forth like lightning.
Where this verse sits
Hosea 6 begins with a communal call to return. The Lord has torn and will heal; he has struck and will bind up. Verse 2 hopes to be revived and raised up to live in his presence. Verse 3 presses on to know him, as certain as dawn and as fruitful as spring rain. Verses 4 and 5 are God’s answer: loyalty like mist, judgment through the prophets’ words. Read verses 1 through 6, including “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” The invitation to know the Lord is real. So is the charge that Israel’s knowing has been weather.
Read Hosea 6Reflection
The people urge one another to return to the Lord, who has torn and will heal, and then to press on to know him. His appearing is compared to a sunrise that does not fail and to spring rain that waters the earth. It is a beautiful resolve. The next verse is the Lord’s reply, and it is not applause. Ephraim and Judah’s loyalty is a morning mist. He has hewn them by the prophets. Anyone who memorizes the rain and skips the mist will think God is flattered by a burst of religious feeling. Pressing on to know him is proved on the third day, not in the warmth of the meeting where the sentence was first said.
A prayer from this verse
“LORD, my loyalty evaporates by noon, and I still talk as if I were pursuing You. Heal what You have torn, and do not let me confuse a sunrise mood with knowledge of You. Make the press last until it looks like obedience when the feeling is gone. Amen.”
One action: Choose one practice of seeking God that you will still be doing in two weeks, write the day you will check it, and tell someone the date.
