Where this verse sits
Isaiah 40 opens the comfort of a people whose hard service is ending. It magnifies the Creator against the nations and against idols, and then it answers Israel’s complaint that their way is hidden from the Lord. Verses 28 through 31 are that answer. God does not grow weary. He strengthens the powerless. Youths stumble. Those who wait renew their strength, from wings to a walk that does not faint. Read verses 27 through 31. The famous flight is the first image, not the only one, and it is spoken to people who were sure God had stopped paying attention.
Read Isaiah 40Reflection
The prophet has asked why Israel says God does not see and has disregarded their right. The answer is the God who does not faint, whose understanding is unsearchable, who gives power to the faint and strength to the weak. Even youths grow tired. The people who renew their strength are the ones who wait on the Lord. Wings, running, and walking are three speeds, and the last is the one that does not faint. Waiting is not passivity. It is the refusal to trade the everlasting God for a strength that looks impressive and then stumbles. Exiles who feel forgotten are the hearers.
A prayer from this verse
“Everlasting God, I have sprinted in my own strength and called the exhaustion holiness. Teach me to wait on You until strength is something You give the faint. If I cannot fly, let me walk and not faint, and correct the complaint that You have not seen my way. Amen.”
One action: When you notice yourself forcing an outcome today, stop for two minutes, pray “I wait on You,” and do not resume until you have asked what faithfulness looks like at a walking pace.
