Where this verse sits
Psalm 27 opens with light, salvation, and a stronghold, then asks to dwell in the house of the Lord and to be taught his way. It does not stay at the opening boast. Near the end the psalmist is still waiting and still telling his heart to wait. Confidence and waiting are one prayer. Read the whole psalm before you use the first verse as a reason you should never feel afraid again.
Read Psalms 27Reflection
The psalmist describes the LORD as his light, salvation, and stronghold, and asks whom he should fear. Light dispels darkness, salvation delivers us from destruction, and strength sustains us in weakness. If the ultimate Power is our shield and salvation, every other threat shrinks in comparison. Fear loses its grip when we focus on the greatness of our Defender.
A prayer from this verse
