“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”

Where this verse sits

Matthew 6 belongs to the Sermon on the Mount. Seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness comes after Jesus has spoken about treasure, a generous eye, and worry over food, drink, and clothing. “All these things” points back to those daily needs. It is not a blank check for every ambition. Read verses 25 through 34 so the promise stays inside the teaching about worry, and so tomorrow’s trouble is left in tomorrow’s hands.

Reflection

Jesus tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, promising that all our physical needs (food, clothing, shelter) will be added unto us. Worrying about the future divides our focus and drains our strength. When we prioritize God's kingdom—His rule, His values, and His righteousness—we place our trust in Him as our Provider, and He takes responsibility for our daily needs.

A prayer from this verse

“Father, forgive me for worrying about tomorrow and putting my daily needs before Your kingdom. Help me seek Your rule and Your righteousness first today, trusting that You will provide all else. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
